1. ACCIDENT DAMAGE! Make sure that you get down and dirty and look for any signs of repair, the tub as you know is a bonded structure and is not really repairable and is the reason why so many elise models are written off by insurers. Look for tell tell signs of paint, if its just cosmetic to get rid of stone chips all well and good or is it a sign of more serious damage, look for signs of poor repair and look at the shut lines to see if they give any clues as to panel replacement. One last thing check the windscreen for chips and take note that replacement is a costly affair. Some places will be charging £5-600 to replace so if the car needs one make sure you get something knocked off the asking price or get them to have it replaced under their insurance. With insurance costs rising some insurers will increase their price even for non-fault claims so do not be tempted to claim on your policy after you get the car, firstly it is fraud which insurers are investigating more thoroughly at present and secondly you could find that the following year your premium leaps up . It will count as one claim against you in the black mark stakes. Don't let any of this put you off the Elise is a great car! P.S. If you need to help to get a decent insurance quote we have a specialist insurance scheme for Lotus cars and it is normally very competitive. If you need help just send me a PM. Kim
2. Eddie There are couple of schemes out there that may be of interest, Aviva is a pay as you drive scheme and the other Axa. This one is a no driving between 11.00pm and 7.00 pm , a sort of curfew with a steep fine if you drive between that time. Restrictive but brings the costs down , give me a call if you want anymore pointers. If Ian is watching, the Lotus scheme now has a £1000 limit for windscreen cover instead of the £500 which was too close for comfort, includes track day use to! KIM
3. Its hard to see past Red Bull and Ferrari for me. So this year I think I'll go for an early season prediction of Alonso. Fast, committed and takes no prisoners, last years Red Bull was the pick of the field and Vettel should have wrapped up the championship earlier than he did. Being champion I think it will be a monkey off the back and he will drive with a bit more maturity this year. So For me its definitely between those two and could go either way. Cars to watch, Torros Rosso, Williams and the Mercs and of course McLaren will start slowly and come on strong from the mid season, but if the Ferrari and Red Bull are reliable I think it will be too late. What of Lotus, well for me theres only one, and thats the Green and Yellow, have had a reasonable turn of pace in practice and I think I will be more generous than Simon and say 8 points by the season end providing they start the early season well when sometimes points can come a little easier through the misfortune of others. I think they will be quicker than last year but they must get on top of reliability, it bugged them all last year and has been evident in practice so they really must get a handle on it. Best possible finish will be 8th in the championship. Good luck to them
4. I could be up for it but I think it would be great for the club to buy and have at stands and shows. I have seen similar items on e-bay before and whilst I don't think we would get it for £40.00 but I don't think it will be more than £200. Seriously what chances the club could buy it? Over to the committee members? If not lets not have a bidding war between us here! need some answers quickly as its only got three days left to run. Kim
5. Very sad, but what a legacy. The original Lotus Elan appreciated by car enthusiasts all over the world and the Workmate a great invention that many, if not all of us have used, some for the use of supporting a Lotus Chassis etc. I have owned both of these diverse masterpieces and can only marvel at the creative ability. I have bumped into him at the Donington show on a number of occasions and he has always remained a Lotus enthusiast and on the occasions I met him, very modest about his achievements. According to reports he had a fall about 5 months ago and his health has deteriorated since, he died in hospital this morning in Jersey where he lived.
6. Sounds like a great event, the mix of cars on the entry list is mouth watering and there is sure to be something for everyone. I have logged it in the diary, just need to see if I can get a Saturday pass off Jules & Lottie. Fingers crossed I will see you there. Thanks for the info Mike
7. Mike, Don't let on and I think we will get away with it! Just remember to private post and don't send anything for all to see because some of the natives are getting restless. If all else fails play dumb, who, what, where, not me governor, honest! If it makes them feel better next time offer to make the quiz " Lotus cars powered by Zetecs". I don't know anything about them, but I know a man that does.
8. Bad news about Kubica, always quick and whilst first testing is no true indication you would have thought he would have been on for some exciting drives/wins this season. Hopefully he will make a full recovery. I have always thought that given a decent car he would be a real challenger for the title, I doubt we will see it this year. Personally I think he is one of the more human drivers in F1, still grounded and still doing things he likes, rallying. There will be many saying Lotus Renault should have stopped him, but it was Roberts decision, he has always said if he can't rally he would find a team that would let him. Good on him, a real racer, not just in it for the sparkle. Sounds like a bit of a freak accident, in rally terms the car does not look that bad but there are reports that the barrier pierced the floor pan which has caused the injuries. Good luck Robert Kubica.
9. The mouth they propose to use has been lifted from the concept Esprit, which has been "lifted" from various Lambos anyway. In terms of heritage, it is nothing like the Lotus 18, do these people think we are really brain washed by such twaddle! The grainy picture which I cannot produce here (Autocar copyright) makes the Evora look beefy and muscular and would be a good stepping stone to launching the new economy range of Ferraris, oops Loti anyway, especially if you are looking to re-image/brand etc. Lets just not pretend it looks anything like a Lotus 18, ok. Very grumpy at this time on a Sunday morning!
10. All interesting stuff Mike. Last years Renault in the emperors new clothes! That could be interesting! Kubica drove the wheels off the Renault last year but I recall that Renault did stop developing it well before the end of the season. That could make for much closer performance between the Green and Yellow Team Lotus and the Black and Gold Renault Lotus than might have been previously envisaged. I hope Team Lotus do number their new car the T128 just to rub up group Lotus the wrong way. As you can detect from my tone I am more a fan of the Green and Yellow than the Group Lotus offering. Why? Not knowing all the ins and outs its hard to say but I perceive Group Lotus to have reneged on the licensing agreement because it no longer fitted in with their new aspirations, but a deal is a deal. I do hope that the court case settles the Team Lotus name issue for good, if you have bought the rights to the name you should be able to use it and If Group Lotus wanted it they have had many years in which to secure it if they had wanted to, but it seems to me they did not want it badly enough and someone else did and now they are not happy that someone else can use it. Lastly, I am not keen that Lotus are just "title sponsors" of the Renault and not actually involved in the design or manufacture of the car. One of the reasons stated for the switch to Renault is they wanted success more quickly, does that mean that in time if Team Lotus start winning they will want to become best buddies again? If Team Lotus win will they be pointing out strong and loud that "Team Lotus has nothing to do with us, Group Lotus", lets see. For me there is more of the Lotus "spirit" in the Team Lotus offering, the sweat and toil of designing, building and running cars as underdogs as opposed to just throwing money at something so you can have it painted in "your colours", which in fact are more synonymous with cigaret branding than Lotus itself. Please don't get me wrong, their (Group Lotus ) efforts with the racing Evora GT4 are much appreciated and look very promising having shown great potential in its last race. That because its a Lotus, Lots of clever Lotus know how, chassis, suspension etc. Thats about my two penneth, can't wait for the new season and looking forward to the 4th Feb when first testing is due to take place, just need to find some channel thats showing it to have a look at the new cars and their potential, and of course the commentators getting themselves tied in a knot, theres the Lotus passing the Lotus, thats not the official car thats the erm Lotus thats a Renault, bring back Murray Walker now that would be real fun!
11. Hi, For all those Loti "resting" over the Christmas/winter period, now could be the chance to bag a good offer. I saw this on antoher Lotus website, I have no connection with them but I thought the offer looked vcery good, if you have some wheels in need of a freshen up this could be a good deal, check out their website at: -My link £20.00 a wheel sounds like a very good price to me. kim
If the Esprit is still running then I'm surprised its not been chased by two mad men in a blue severly leaning Renault Clio....don't you fancy a go at this Kim - ah, maybe the Renault is not classic enough! Tim.
Tim I would love ago, but the Clio is too new! lol. Latest update is that they have made it to the finish and they are in John O'Groats, the question is now will they get back! The Esprit had to be taken to a garage for "specialist repairs" at one point but is now back in the running! He is obviously very determined.

Latest up date. Some cars crashed out this morning, friends still in but stuck on M8, the plan is to regroup at stirling services and wait for roads to be cleared. Not sure if they will be able to complete forecast just gets worse. Still 276 miles to go from there! There may be lots of snow, but its a good excuse to go out and play. A friend of mine is on LeJog at the moment, in fact it should end today in John O'Groats. Good luck. I caught up with them on Sunday In Derbyshire, it was just beginning to get difficult as they headed north, a lot of tests and route were being cut. 15. Hi, There is another good book on Elans, its called the "Lotus Elan, a Restoration Guide', printed by Brooklands books ISBN code 1-855-20596-3 Available from all good book shops as the saying goes. Don't be put off by the title because it contains chapters on what to look for when buying, where to start and so on. But in order of importance (only my opinion) you should look for these, Chassis corrosion, Health of the engine./gearbox. Note that 4 speed boxes seem more reliable than the 5 speed and some parts for the 5 speed are becoming very hard to get hold off and expensive to rebuild. Side sill strengtheners, have they been replaced. Make sure ALL the electrics work, there is quite a bit on this more "upmarket" Elan to go wrong. Body condition For your budget you are probably not going to get a mint car but something pretty decent, parts availability is generally very good with lots of specialists and of course e-bay being good sources. Lots of friendly help and advice available here and one of the best places for +2 information is the Lotuselan.net website. A site dedicated just to the elan (classic variety) and theire archive provides just about any information you could wish to know. Definitely worth a look. Hopes this helps and good luck.
16. Congratulations to Vettle, We all knew how fast he is and certainly destined to be world champion but I thought it would be another year or so. I feel he really is the favoured son of Red Bull and this championship will only enhance this. I think this could be the first of many, maybe even as soon as next year if the RB7 is as good as this years car. The only fly in the ointment is that their Kerrs system for next year is not reckoned to be as good as the others by some margin. But I am confident that Newey will produce a good car so they will certainly be right up there. There was an article in one of the papers at the weekend, Neweys dad had a Lotus Elan which the young Newey took apart and rebuilt several times. Bad news for Webber next year, he admitted that this was his best shot at the title. I wanted Webber to win, he's fast, surprisingly fast when compared to Vettle but I fear this year really was his one and only shot at the title and he did not quite manage it. Shame because he seems like a good bloke, would have done much better racing in the 60s & 70s when poletics did not play such an important role. McLaren will be right in there as well. Always good at developing a good car through the season as they have done again this year. They had the best Kerrs system and will start from a fairly strong position. Hamilton still fast and Button not quite as fast but the new tyres which they reckon will need more looking after may play into his gentle driving style as he has not been able to get the car working and tyres up to temp in qualifying especially. But sadly I don't see Button winning another championship. Alonso, should have won it this year, great end to the season after a shaky start, first win excluded. Will be there or there abouts next year, after experiencing that winning feeling again he will be pushing for more. Massa, sadly will be second fiddle to Alonso again, but right from the start not mid season. I hope Renault put a good car under Kubica, I think he is as fast as anyone out there, he just needs to get in the right car at the right time, but there have been many good drivers who have never managed to hook into that scenario. Jean Alesi was super fast but was never quite in the right place. Which Lotus team will I support next year, probably the one which won't be calling itself Lotus. They have showed passion, understanding and appreciation of Lotus heritage, more than Lotus have done in recent years and it was great to see them turn out at Snetterton, I wish them all the best for the courts case and next year what ever happens. They are addressing their worst issue of the year, the hydraulics. With Renault and RB stuff on it I hope they make a good step forward. But as we have seen this year the difference between the top 10 is only a second or so and 10 - 20 is another 1.5 - 2 seconds so it if they could be consistently 12/13/14 in quali next year I think that would be a great result. Hopefully some points next year maybe, even if by others misfortune, would be a deserved reward for the ambition they are showing. Could they do a RedBull in 6 years? I doubt it unless you get a real top designer on board, Newey, Brawn etc. But here's hoping.
17.
Hi all. I went to the shardlow meeting this evening and saw no-one else there. Did I miss something or is it no longer held. Either that or no one takes the lotus out. Sorry if tis is a silly question but I'm a newbie.... Cheers.
Hi there, The meet was on but unfortunately I was unable to go, to be fair people don't get there until about 8 pm so I am not sure if you went ealier and didnt see anyone. There are two car parks and we normally park in the lower (right hand side as you drive in) car park. If you go next month I will try and look out for you and if you want to send me a PM a couple of days before I will try and make sure we can meet up. Welcome aboard. Kim

19. I have been looking at Eddies car of the week feature and thought I could not let the avid readers miss out on this one off opportunity. It's a rare low mileage one owner car and it looks like it only needs a bit of cosmetic work to get it back on the road. They don't come like this very often. It's on ebay now so you will need to hurry as it's bound to get snapped up quickly even with a a highish reserve. Its got a lovely wood dash and screen. 20. Bla,bla.bla, cocaine Kate, Nutcase Naomi and Alec (I'll rip your head off) Baldwin are all part of the Lotus brand are they! Well no thanks. Has anyone told him it's about the cars not a lifestyle. The Lotus/Ferrari plan is based on an investment of £770 million pounds, it seems much of that is to be spent on lifestyle/marketeers. Oh dear.
21. A bit late but hope you had a good one. Kim
22. Not that I care but will Ferrari still be Fiat? News also from the Paris Motor show say that Fiat are considering selling off part of ( a stake in ) Ferrari to fund its involvement with Chrysler the american auto giant. So is this why we have Ferrari men at Lotus, jumping ship! Perhaps Lotus could buy a stake in it and badge the new range as Ferraris...lol Look on crashnet for story or just type something into google (Fiat to sell stake in Ferrari) if you want to know more.
23. Hi Eddy Interesting selection of cars, always a good meeting. How did the Evora get on, looks like it had problems judging by the pics but when it was running was it fast?

Whilst I cannot deny that they all are very attractive I think Lotus would need something a bit different to tempt the clientèle away from these makes. If any of these do progress from launch to reach production it is going to be some years away, won't the designs seem a bit old by then? The Esprit replacement should be here now! not in 2/3/4 years time. I just don't see it happening as per the launch. In my opinion it would be better to concentrate on one jaw dropping super car of original design to prove that Lotus can do it and progress steadily and maybe exclusively into the super league if thats ultimately where they want to go. I of course would still like to see a light weight small sports car as a feeder/taster of what Lotus have traditionally done best so that there is a stepping stone progression in the range, Elise, Evora, Esprit. But is that too sensible, not profitable? Maybe we will just have to resign to the fact that eventually Lotus may be manufactured abroad to keep costs down. As long as all the technical stuff is designed in Hethel that would not bother me too much if it meant Lotus would be profitable and therefore sustainable. and another thing..... Can they please come up with some new names. Elan, Esprit and Elite, they were iconic cars and in their time they were ground breaking in their own ways and later the Elise was too so can they please not dilute these icons by sticking these names on this range of cars which I would not describe as ground breaking or new because they do not offer anything very different that is not being done by other manufacturers now. If "the future starts here" lets have some future names, suggestions on a post card please. I do worry about this and the comparison with Donington is a very good parallel, but the original Elise was born out of desperation at a time when Lotus could have gone to the wall, it was certainly a car that saved Lotus. Let's just hope that enough "old boys" who have seen it all before can hunker down in a back room some where ready to pop out again with a new small sports car when the time is right, whats wrong with being the makers of world class, sector beating small sports cars anyway? I know they have to make money and so production abroad may be the way forward, a rival to Ferrari I dont think so. Perhaps we should nominate our chairman Mr Stripe to the L.A.C (Lotus Advisory Council) anyone in favour say "I"
25. Well I watched the live broadcast from Paris of the future line up. Was not keen on the very obvious computer generated driving scenes but what do people think of the cars, styling and the direction the Lotus seemingly intend to take and do we think that the future will actually happen?
