Snow photos

There may be lots of snow, but its a good excuse to go out and play. A friend of mine is on LeJog at the moment, in fact it should end today in John O'Groats. Good luck. I caught up with them on Sunday In Derbyshire, it was just beginning to get difficult as they headed north, a lot of tests and route were being cut. 2. Hi, There is another good book on Elans, its called the "Lotus Elan, a Restoration Guide', printed by Brooklands books ISBN code 1-855-20596-3 Available from all good book shops as the saying goes. Don't be put off by the title because it contains chapters on what to look for when buying, where to start and so on. But in order of importance (only my opinion) you should look for these, Chassis corrosion, Health of the engine./gearbox. Note that 4 speed boxes seem more reliable than the 5 speed and some parts for the 5 speed are becoming very hard to get hold off and expensive to rebuild. Side sill strengtheners, have they been replaced. Make sure ALL the electrics work, there is quite a bit on this more "upmarket" Elan to go wrong. Body condition For your budget you are probably not going to get a mint car but something pretty decent, parts availability is generally very good with lots of specialists and of course e-bay being good sources. Lots of friendly help and advice available here and one of the best places for +2 information is the Lotuselan.net website. A site dedicated just to the elan (classic variety) and theire archive provides just about any information you could wish to know. Definitely worth a look. Hopes this helps and good luck.
3. Congratulations to Vettle, We all knew how fast he is and certainly destined to be world champion but I thought it would be another year or so. I feel he really is the favoured son of Red Bull and this championship will only enhance this. I think this could be the first of many, maybe even as soon as next year if the RB7 is as good as this years car. The only fly in the ointment is that their Kerrs system for next year is not reckoned to be as good as the others by some margin. But I am confident that Newey will produce a good car so they will certainly be right up there. There was an article in one of the papers at the weekend, Neweys dad had a Lotus Elan which the young Newey took apart and rebuilt several times. Bad news for Webber next year, he admitted that this was his best shot at the title. I wanted Webber to win, he's fast, surprisingly fast when compared to Vettle but I fear this year really was his one and only shot at the title and he did not quite manage it. Shame because he seems like a good bloke, would have done much better racing in the 60s & 70s when poletics did not play such an important role. McLaren will be right in there as well. Always good at developing a good car through the season as they have done again this year. They had the best Kerrs system and will start from a fairly strong position. Hamilton still fast and Button not quite as fast but the new tyres which they reckon will need more looking after may play into his gentle driving style as he has not been able to get the car working and tyres up to temp in qualifying especially. But sadly I don't see Button winning another championship. Alonso, should have won it this year, great end to the season after a shaky start, first win excluded. Will be there or there abouts next year, after experiencing that winning feeling again he will be pushing for more. Massa, sadly will be second fiddle to Alonso again, but right from the start not mid season. I hope Renault put a good car under Kubica, I think he is as fast as anyone out there, he just needs to get in the right car at the right time, but there have been many good drivers who have never managed to hook into that scenario. Jean Alesi was super fast but was never quite in the right place. Which Lotus team will I support next year, probably the one which won't be calling itself Lotus. They have showed passion, understanding and appreciation of Lotus heritage, more than Lotus have done in recent years and it was great to see them turn out at Snetterton, I wish them all the best for the courts case and next year what ever happens. They are addressing their worst issue of the year, the hydraulics. With Renault and RB stuff on it I hope they make a good step forward. But as we have seen this year the difference between the top 10 is only a second or so and 10 - 20 is another 1.5 - 2 seconds so it if they could be consistently 12/13/14 in quali next year I think that would be a great result. Hopefully some points next year maybe, even if by others misfortune, would be a deserved reward for the ambition they are showing. Could they do a RedBull in 6 years? I doubt it unless you get a real top designer on board, Newey, Brawn etc. But here's hoping.
4.
Hi all. I went to the shardlow meeting this evening and saw no-one else there. Did I miss something or is it no longer held. Either that or no one takes the lotus out. Sorry if tis is a silly question but I'm a newbie.... Cheers.
Hi there, The meet was on but unfortunately I was unable to go, to be fair people don't get there until about 8 pm so I am not sure if you went ealier and didnt see anyone. There are two car parks and we normally park in the lower (right hand side as you drive in) car park. If you go next month I will try and look out for you and if you want to send me a PM a couple of days before I will try and make sure we can meet up. Welcome aboard. Kim
5.
Links don't work for me, have you got the eBay item number so we can take a look. Cheers Jon
Sorry Jon Go to ebay and try this, you won't be disappointed! Item no 260676887900
6. I have been looking at Eddies car of the week feature and thought I could not let the avid readers miss out on this one off opportunity. It's a rare low mileage one owner car and it looks like it only needs a bit of cosmetic work to get it back on the road. They don't come like this very often. It's on ebay now so you will need to hurry as it's bound to get snapped up quickly even with a a highish reserve. Its got a lovely wood dash and screen. 7. Bla,bla.bla, cocaine Kate, Nutcase Naomi and Alec (I'll rip your head off) Baldwin are all part of the Lotus brand are they! Well no thanks. Has anyone told him it's about the cars not a lifestyle. The Lotus/Ferrari plan is based on an investment of £770 million pounds, it seems much of that is to be spent on lifestyle/marketeers. Oh dear.
8. A bit late but hope you had a good one. Kim
9. Not that I care but will Ferrari still be Fiat? News also from the Paris Motor show say that Fiat are considering selling off part of ( a stake in ) Ferrari to fund its involvement with Chrysler the american auto giant. So is this why we have Ferrari men at Lotus, jumping ship! Perhaps Lotus could buy a stake in it and badge the new range as Ferraris...lol Look on crashnet for story or just type something into google (Fiat to sell stake in Ferrari) if you want to know more.
10. Hi Eddy Interesting selection of cars, always a good meeting. How did the Evora get on, looks like it had problems judging by the pics but when it was running was it fast?

Whilst I cannot deny that they all are very attractive I think Lotus would need something a bit different to tempt the clientèle away from these makes. If any of these do progress from launch to reach production it is going to be some years away, won't the designs seem a bit old by then? The Esprit replacement should be here now! not in 2/3/4 years time. I just don't see it happening as per the launch. In my opinion it would be better to concentrate on one jaw dropping super car of original design to prove that Lotus can do it and progress steadily and maybe exclusively into the super league if thats ultimately where they want to go. I of course would still like to see a light weight small sports car as a feeder/taster of what Lotus have traditionally done best so that there is a stepping stone progression in the range, Elise, Evora, Esprit. But is that too sensible, not profitable? Maybe we will just have to resign to the fact that eventually Lotus may be manufactured abroad to keep costs down. As long as all the technical stuff is designed in Hethel that would not bother me too much if it meant Lotus would be profitable and therefore sustainable. and another thing..... Can they please come up with some new names. Elan, Esprit and Elite, they were iconic cars and in their time they were ground breaking in their own ways and later the Elise was too so can they please not dilute these icons by sticking these names on this range of cars which I would not describe as ground breaking or new because they do not offer anything very different that is not being done by other manufacturers now. If "the future starts here" lets have some future names, suggestions on a post card please. I do worry about this and the comparison with Donington is a very good parallel, but the original Elise was born out of desperation at a time when Lotus could have gone to the wall, it was certainly a car that saved Lotus. Let's just hope that enough "old boys" who have seen it all before can hunker down in a back room some where ready to pop out again with a new small sports car when the time is right, whats wrong with being the makers of world class, sector beating small sports cars anyway? I know they have to make money and so production abroad may be the way forward, a rival to Ferrari I dont think so. Perhaps we should nominate our chairman Mr Stripe to the L.A.C (Lotus Advisory Council) anyone in favour say "I"
12. Well I watched the live broadcast from Paris of the future line up. Was not keen on the very obvious computer generated driving scenes but what do people think of the cars, styling and the direction the Lotus seemingly intend to take and do we think that the future will actually happen?
13. The "Revival" is a great event. Great racing and sights you will not see at other race tracks, the free show (classics car park) is one of the best. A few pics mainly of the non racing side as there have been some excellent racing pics already posted. Personally I think this beats an F1 GP anytime, extortionate prices, often poor viewing and very restricted access. But if you have to go to one, save up and go to Monaco, it is the best because you are so close and the noise bounces off the buildings, but its expensive! 14. Lotus back in "Meltdown Mode" ........... again! As a long time follower of all things Lotus I have to say that history seems to be repeating itself. It does seem as if Lotus could be in self destruct mode. The new CEO is trying to carry his Ferrari "experience" too far, too fast. If as it seems he wants to see Lotus rival Ferrari straight away and to launch expensive upmarket cars now in a raging recession which seems ill timed. The £100K Elite is not a Supercar in the Ferrari/McLaren/Lamborghini mode, it is a mid point. The "super" rich who buy "super" cars are for the main part protected from the recession, however the aspiring 100K customers may well be hit and prudently pulling in the purse strings for a while, but equally not quite so badly hit to buy the Lotus hot hatch "noddy car" as seen in the press recently. The Evora while generally well received has not seemingly resulted in such huge order books that "production has had to be increased to meet demand." Lotus will need time to truly move upmarket and the Evora has had many a comment by the press such as "the Lotus still caries a whiff of glue about it". It's not that they don't like it, but they seem to think the cost for what you get is too high, in performance terms it may rival or beat its Porsche alternative but in terms of build quality and engineering it still has some way to go. It must be said that the likes of Porsche and Ferrari have a complete product, a car that carries its own engine and some how that gives them more credibility than a Lotus. For most of its career Lotus has been seen as the plucky underdog producing small capacity cars that out perform more costly and bigger engined rivals, a car that is affordable and punches above its weight. This is exemplified by perhaps its two greatest cars the original Elan and Elise, the Elise did not have its own engine and at this level this is acceptable. The price and whole package of performance and driver appeal giving it mass recognition and sales. If Lotus are to get into true "Supercar" territory they are going to have to do a lt nore than just up the price and use "customer" engines. Lotus financial fortunes have always been shaky throughout its history and it is difficult to understand where the money for the new road cars models is to come from let alone the "Group Lotus" racing ventures that are being touted at the moment. I personally don't have too much of a problem if Lotus want to go upmarket again even into supercar territory but it is a hard trick too pull off. I would have thought that Lotus in F1 racing would have been good for group Lotus and their upmarket aspirations and whilst their financial stake has been minimal the association with Lotus roads cars cannot have been a bad thing. I think this dispute is ill advised on this level and legally I would be surprised if they will win it given the court cases that have been held over this issue before. This years F1 Lotus have gained lots of publicity this year, mostly good as Lotus have consistently been the top newcomers, there are signs that their pace has slipped of late but this is probably due to the fact they have openly admitted to being focused on next years cars with Renault engines and a good move if the current season is anything to go by. It seems that group Lotus now just want to muscle in on the show because it now fits their new "profile" under the new CEO. It could all end in tears, it could be that Lotus (the group) could come a cropper due to over ambitious plans on the road cars and as someone already said a scatter gun approach to motor sport. But what ever the case may be I think that Lotus somehow will be persevered even if it did entail someone picking up "group Lotus" very cheaply like BMW or even Tony F in the next few years. The we can all start to debate whether a Lotus owned by BMW is really a Lotus.
15. In another part to the story it says that they now own all the historic Lotus F1 cars. Does this mean they have done a deal with Clive. Anybody know anything else?
16.
I didn't say I didn't like Goodwood...... just that there are alternatives ANGOULEME I DO like Tour Britannia. Marcus Pye was out in the Lotus 26R I believe but it looks as if there were some problems in your photos. Do you know what was wrong?
Mike, the car in the picture is the Sean Walker car, and that was just a routine checkover before the race at Mallory, it won the race! The Pye/Shriver 26r went out of the event in the morning when the had an off and hit a tree, both of the crew were ok, but the car obviously retired.
17. If Goodwoods not quite your thing Mike how about some of these from Tour Britannia on Thursday at Mallory Park. 18. Paris Motor Show. Something big is set to happen. Lotus have booked the BIGGEST stand of any manufacturer at the show. Lotus have advised employees that if anything leaks out and it can be traced back to them, they will be instantly dismissed! So it fair to say we are going to see something more than just the current range. It is very likely that the much talked about and long overdue "NEW Esprit" will be unveiled and it may be much closer to production than we think. We may also see a "super car" announced which will rival the likes of Ferrari, nice but out of most peoples price range. The ultimate Lotus track car may be on show. I hope that Lotus continue with affordable sports cars, the sort that punch above their weight in the spirit of the original Elan and now the Elise. I think that despite the latest face lift of the Elise it's latest engine is a retrograde step and perhaps it's time for a completely new small sports car, lets hope so. Rumor also has it that the unloved current Europa might soon be dropped from the range. Paris show is 30th September, watch this space....................
19. Hi Andy Been to Silverstone today, Chevrons a plenty and some other interesting stuff, We are off to Goodwood as well, only 7 days to go!. 20. To John, Wish I'd kept the bubble cars, have you seent he price of them now!!! No photos, I owned a car but no camera! Kim
21. My list is a bit like Mikes, I could go on and on, but I'll try not to bore you. My first car was a BMW, but it was only an Isetta Bubble car, this was quickly followed by another bubble car when the first one blew up! You could drive these at 16 and as I was not allowed a motorcycle (a good thing in hindsight) this was my first set of wheels. The bubble car ended up with mini cooper "s" wide wheels and at 16 I thought it was the business. Next, now aged 17 followed a number of Spridgets in various states of tune and modifications ranging from one called the "puurple people eater" yes it was purple, to a full monty wide wheeled 1340cc quick beast. Other interesting cars over the years, Hillman Avenger Tiger, Jaguar E Type (only for a week), Triumph GTS Mk1, BMW M6 a proper beemer and quick, in fact the fastest car I have driven, the book says 163 mph and on a private road of course it does every single one of them. I have also had and look back with affection on, a variety of Minis, Moggy Minor, VW Camper (the slowest thing I've had), Mk1 Cortina GT. The worst thing I have owned was a Nissan Serena van, It was so noisy as the engine was in front with you under the seats. It would also try to put you in a ditch at the first sign of a corner. There are lots of other Euro boxes I have owned that could be contenders in this category, a Citroen GSA spings to mind but lets not go there......... Lotus cars owned, Elan S4 DHC, Europa Twin Cam, Europa S2, Esprit S3, Caterham 7, Excel. Would like.. Elite Mk14, Lotus Cortina Mk1, S1 Elise and S1 Exige

Autumn Drive Out

Hi Mike Sounds like a great day out but unfortunately we will be away on holiday. Hope it all goes well, I know how much hard work is involved in organising something like this. Kim, Jules & Lottie
23. Well done Mark Webber! What a refreshing change to have some one who does not always speak the corperate garbage and politics of F1! Loved his comment on the radio just after he won. "Not bad for a number two driver" Red Bull Racing are turning into a PR dissaster zone, blaming Webber for that comming together that in most peoples mind was down to Vettle, then giving the wing to Vettle this weekend has done them no favours. I just hope now that Webber can go on to maintain his form. Vettel is fast, very fast and one day will be champion, but this season has shown some immaturity, no one likes getting beaten, especially by your team mate but he has not handled it well, his attitude has made him look a bit spoilt and he is clearly rattled when he is out performed by MW. Mark Webber is a wysiwyg kind of guy and thats vary rare in F1. The only other person who is "telling it like it is", is Eddie Jordan, some of what he says is a bit banal but he was spot on when he asked Christian Horner why his congratulations to MW seem so unenthusiastic compared to when SV wins. More of that please EJ. New slogan for Red Bull.... "Red Bull nicks your wings" Good news Lotus are showing real ambition, good result this weekend, especially for Trulli who has endured some very bad luck up until now. I look at the race predictions on this forum and for the Lotus results they are always very opptomistic, this car was designed late, overweight, under developed and with a basic aero package. In the time they had they have done well to be on the grid and be best of the rest. What I really like is the news that they are seeking the Renault engine for next year and that they are hoping to change the name to Team Lotus. This shows that they are serious about improving and are not there just to make up the numbers, they are working very hard on next years car, possibbly to the detriment of further significant improvements this year but in my opinion that is the right thing to do. Well done to all at Lotus for showing the ambition and drive to take them to the next level. Good solid mid-field performances next year would be very good progress for a year 2 team.
24. OK 1) Vetel 2) Hamilton 3) Alonso 16th Heikki 17th Trulli Hope I'm wrong and it is Button,Hamilton,Webber. Heikki 10th Trulli 11th....... but don't bet your house on it. Is it just me but why would I like to see Button in front of Hamilton. I think Hamilton is probably quicker but for some reason I'm not keen on Hamilton.
25. You really should move back to the UK. But as England are out of the football I suppose you are more German at the momemt?
