1.
Hello everybody...... On the matter of Insurance I would be interested to hear what I might expect to find as a premium as a 60 year old with a clean licence and full bonus? This would be with limited mileage say 5,000 and no commuting. I would be interested to hear any thoughts on Elise owneship by the more mature (in years). Thanks.
Dave, my day job is an insurance broker and we have Lotus scheme that has been helpful to some of the people on here, I would need a bit more information to work out a quote for you. See my details under the insurance section of these forums. or send me a pm kim Not at work form the 15-19th, back on 20th if that helps
2. Hi all Just to confirm there is always a meet on the second Monday of the month at Shardlow - 7.30pm is probably a bit early, although Kim and I are often there then taking advantage of the food menu! This is a joint LDC and Club Lotus meet, no point in having two, we're all there for the same reason - LOTUS! It's a very informal meet, lots of chat and laughs (usually the ladies who have been consuming the alcohol as the men are driving their precious cars!). If the weathers good!!! lots of cars and chat in the car park. So see you there? Jules, Mrs At the Limit
3. Looks very interesting but we will be at Goodwood. I hope it goes well!
4. Donington Show, Bruntingthorpe, Donington Racing. Well done to all who took some part in these activities over the weekend. The Bruntingthorpe Crew, well done, fantastic result, lots of money raised for charity. Brilliant! Well done especially to Eddie King, Gill Edwards, Beryl and CJ and everyone else who was there, it a long day, you spend your own money on petrol and tires and you keep going back for more! Its a great cause and to give others the thrill of Lotus performance is what its all about. The Donington Show. The show would not happen but for the planning and effort put in prior to the weekend. To all of those who run around to make this happen its a wonderful effort. Martin Edwards, Colin Smith Simon and Eunice and to all the owners of cars who kindly display them and answer the same questions over and over again!. But I know everyone enjoyed it. Special mention must go to Jenny, absolute star all weekend and was there from the crack of dawn till close on both days, go and get some sleep! Donington Racing, well done to all those involved and those who went along to support Chris Mayhew and Steve Edwards. (making his racing debut) The racing was on both days and the car had problems on Saturday cutting Chris's race short. Sunday saw a better result as the car was running well again and with lots of well wishers to see long time LDC member Steve race made for a great atmosphere. Steve has been spannner man for Chris and with a very kind invitation by Chris to swap his spanners for a stint at the wheel just shows what a great club we belong to. Three great things happening on one weekend, for a very small club we certainly punch above our weight. Great effort by everyone involved, well done LDC!
5. Hi, Grumpy You did not waste much time getting yourself on to a stand did you. I will say hello over the weekend, I will helping out on the LDC stand on Saturday and will be cheering on our home grown racers on Sunday as well so hopefully we can catch up at some point. See you soon Kim
6. I hope you remembered to tell your insurance company!
7.
All now fitted and much improved, the old Konis were well past their sell by date !!! I went for the Bilstien S1 to S2 upgrade from Elise Parts due to supply issues with the other kits and long life experience of others, so now the car is a bit lower. Chatted to Martin and his advice spot on as normal, this upgrade kit is well worth it for fast road set up and well made with good strong S steel replacement brackets. A tip for anybody doing the changeover. You should torque up the damper bolts with the suspension loaded, but this is almost impossible with the wheels on, so whilst you have the car up on the 4 jack stands what I did was in turn to place a bottle jack under the lower outboard ball joint and using a protective wooden block between the top of the jack and the ball joint case, jack the suspension until the damper becomes compressed and that particular corner of the car starts to list from the main supporting jack stand, at this point the suspension on the corner is now approximately under the load of the car. This then gives full access to finally torque up the upper and lower shock bolts to the recommended 45Nm. It worked for me !!! I measured the ride height and it is now spot on 5 inches ground to chassis on all 4 corners. I had the geo done last year when the toe link went so the consequence of changing the shocks is to add a very small amount of additional negative camber. I may need to get this dialled out to avoid any inner tyre wear, or just pick bendy fast roads every time I go out for a drive !!! The ride is far better than before, cornering far more precise and confidence level much improved. The annoying rattles that use to come from every bump have now gone completely (this was a feature of the red Konis). The only slight problem (design feature !!) is that I have the infamous squeak after a long journey on a hot day (as it was on Sunday) but this goes away of its own accord. Oh, and now it is impossible to get my hand into the wheel arches now, so I will need to invent a method of jacking to clean the car !! So would recommend this change to anybody still on the original red Konis !!!
8. Hi all, The festival was nothing like as big as last year but that would have been very hard to top. Still a great event and probably the most Lotus cars in one place at any event throughout the year. Andy Dolan qualified 10th out of a very large grid, up to 6th on 1st lap and made his way through to 4th at one point only to have his race ended with a couple of laps to go when taken out by another competitor. Better luck next time Andy, Brands Hatch in a month if the car can be repaired in time! He's a few pictures for those who could not make it. 9. As mentioned previously, we were there! Successful first glamping trip for all three of us in the van. However, when we arrived at the SELOC camp site it resembled the Glastonbury mud pit - not at all wheelchair friendly!! So we camped further round the track - didn't make any difference, we could still hear them!!! A great weekend, not like last year of course, but as always the Lotus racing was very close. MR2's very tame in comparison. Clive Chapman, Malcolm Ricketts, et al, in attendance - the ex F1 cars fab. I'm sure Kim will have photos to add.
10. Please don't set Kim off about snoring - I'm afraid to say I snore MUCH louder than him - hmmm, could be something to do with the amount of red wine I consume!?!? I think Kim and Lottie are considering putting me outside the van in the one man(woman) tent he used for Le Mans - but then I'll just keep the rest of the camp site awake, unless everyone else consumes plenty of alcohol - now there's a thought!! By the sound of it, they wont take much persuading! Jules
11. Hi guys and gals, Is anyone from LDC camping with SELOC here? We're thinking of bringing the Big Blue Van with all three of us sleeping in it for the first time!! However, I'm told the campsite could be quite lively- any previous experiences??? Ta Jules with Kim and Lottie
12. Lets hope things improve, second session and the Green and Yellows don't look fast. 4 seconds of the pace is a lifetime in F1, to be realistic they need to find 3 seconds to be in the thick of it and thats a very big ask! Best of the "new" teams is not going to be good enough this year. Lets hope they find something for tomorrow and can at least fight with the Force Indias who are not too far in front.
13. ACCIDENT DAMAGE! Make sure that you get down and dirty and look for any signs of repair, the tub as you know is a bonded structure and is not really repairable and is the reason why so many elise models are written off by insurers. Look for tell tell signs of paint, if its just cosmetic to get rid of stone chips all well and good or is it a sign of more serious damage, look for signs of poor repair and look at the shut lines to see if they give any clues as to panel replacement. One last thing check the windscreen for chips and take note that replacement is a costly affair. Some places will be charging £5-600 to replace so if the car needs one make sure you get something knocked off the asking price or get them to have it replaced under their insurance. With insurance costs rising some insurers will increase their price even for non-fault claims so do not be tempted to claim on your policy after you get the car, firstly it is fraud which insurers are investigating more thoroughly at present and secondly you could find that the following year your premium leaps up . It will count as one claim against you in the black mark stakes. Don't let any of this put you off the Elise is a great car! P.S. If you need to help to get a decent insurance quote we have a specialist insurance scheme for Lotus cars and it is normally very competitive. If you need help just send me a PM. Kim
14. Eddie There are couple of schemes out there that may be of interest, Aviva is a pay as you drive scheme and the other Axa. This one is a no driving between 11.00pm and 7.00 pm , a sort of curfew with a steep fine if you drive between that time. Restrictive but brings the costs down , give me a call if you want anymore pointers. If Ian is watching, the Lotus scheme now has a £1000 limit for windscreen cover instead of the £500 which was too close for comfort, includes track day use to! KIM
15. Its hard to see past Red Bull and Ferrari for me. So this year I think I'll go for an early season prediction of Alonso. Fast, committed and takes no prisoners, last years Red Bull was the pick of the field and Vettel should have wrapped up the championship earlier than he did. Being champion I think it will be a monkey off the back and he will drive with a bit more maturity this year. So For me its definitely between those two and could go either way. Cars to watch, Torros Rosso, Williams and the Mercs and of course McLaren will start slowly and come on strong from the mid season, but if the Ferrari and Red Bull are reliable I think it will be too late. What of Lotus, well for me theres only one, and thats the Green and Yellow, have had a reasonable turn of pace in practice and I think I will be more generous than Simon and say 8 points by the season end providing they start the early season well when sometimes points can come a little easier through the misfortune of others. I think they will be quicker than last year but they must get on top of reliability, it bugged them all last year and has been evident in practice so they really must get a handle on it. Best possible finish will be 8th in the championship. Good luck to them
16. I could be up for it but I think it would be great for the club to buy and have at stands and shows. I have seen similar items on e-bay before and whilst I don't think we would get it for £40.00 but I don't think it will be more than £200. Seriously what chances the club could buy it? Over to the committee members? If not lets not have a bidding war between us here! need some answers quickly as its only got three days left to run. Kim
17. Very sad, but what a legacy. The original Lotus Elan appreciated by car enthusiasts all over the world and the Workmate a great invention that many, if not all of us have used, some for the use of supporting a Lotus Chassis etc. I have owned both of these diverse masterpieces and can only marvel at the creative ability. I have bumped into him at the Donington show on a number of occasions and he has always remained a Lotus enthusiast and on the occasions I met him, very modest about his achievements. According to reports he had a fall about 5 months ago and his health has deteriorated since, he died in hospital this morning in Jersey where he lived.
18. Sounds like a great event, the mix of cars on the entry list is mouth watering and there is sure to be something for everyone. I have logged it in the diary, just need to see if I can get a Saturday pass off Jules & Lottie. Fingers crossed I will see you there. Thanks for the info Mike
19. Mike, Don't let on and I think we will get away with it! Just remember to private post and don't send anything for all to see because some of the natives are getting restless. If all else fails play dumb, who, what, where, not me governor, honest! If it makes them feel better next time offer to make the quiz " Lotus cars powered by Zetecs". I don't know anything about them, but I know a man that does.
20. Bad news about Kubica, always quick and whilst first testing is no true indication you would have thought he would have been on for some exciting drives/wins this season. Hopefully he will make a full recovery. I have always thought that given a decent car he would be a real challenger for the title, I doubt we will see it this year. Personally I think he is one of the more human drivers in F1, still grounded and still doing things he likes, rallying. There will be many saying Lotus Renault should have stopped him, but it was Roberts decision, he has always said if he can't rally he would find a team that would let him. Good on him, a real racer, not just in it for the sparkle. Sounds like a bit of a freak accident, in rally terms the car does not look that bad but there are reports that the barrier pierced the floor pan which has caused the injuries. Good luck Robert Kubica.
21. The mouth they propose to use has been lifted from the concept Esprit, which has been "lifted" from various Lambos anyway. In terms of heritage, it is nothing like the Lotus 18, do these people think we are really brain washed by such twaddle! The grainy picture which I cannot produce here (Autocar copyright) makes the Evora look beefy and muscular and would be a good stepping stone to launching the new economy range of Ferraris, oops Loti anyway, especially if you are looking to re-image/brand etc. Lets just not pretend it looks anything like a Lotus 18, ok. Very grumpy at this time on a Sunday morning!
22. All interesting stuff Mike. Last years Renault in the emperors new clothes! That could be interesting! Kubica drove the wheels off the Renault last year but I recall that Renault did stop developing it well before the end of the season. That could make for much closer performance between the Green and Yellow Team Lotus and the Black and Gold Renault Lotus than might have been previously envisaged. I hope Team Lotus do number their new car the T128 just to rub up group Lotus the wrong way. As you can detect from my tone I am more a fan of the Green and Yellow than the Group Lotus offering. Why? Not knowing all the ins and outs its hard to say but I perceive Group Lotus to have reneged on the licensing agreement because it no longer fitted in with their new aspirations, but a deal is a deal. I do hope that the court case settles the Team Lotus name issue for good, if you have bought the rights to the name you should be able to use it and If Group Lotus wanted it they have had many years in which to secure it if they had wanted to, but it seems to me they did not want it badly enough and someone else did and now they are not happy that someone else can use it. Lastly, I am not keen that Lotus are just "title sponsors" of the Renault and not actually involved in the design or manufacture of the car. One of the reasons stated for the switch to Renault is they wanted success more quickly, does that mean that in time if Team Lotus start winning they will want to become best buddies again? If Team Lotus win will they be pointing out strong and loud that "Team Lotus has nothing to do with us, Group Lotus", lets see. For me there is more of the Lotus "spirit" in the Team Lotus offering, the sweat and toil of designing, building and running cars as underdogs as opposed to just throwing money at something so you can have it painted in "your colours", which in fact are more synonymous with cigaret branding than Lotus itself. Please don't get me wrong, their (Group Lotus ) efforts with the racing Evora GT4 are much appreciated and look very promising having shown great potential in its last race. That because its a Lotus, Lots of clever Lotus know how, chassis, suspension etc. Thats about my two penneth, can't wait for the new season and looking forward to the 4th Feb when first testing is due to take place, just need to find some channel thats showing it to have a look at the new cars and their potential, and of course the commentators getting themselves tied in a knot, theres the Lotus passing the Lotus, thats not the official car thats the erm Lotus thats a Renault, bring back Murray Walker now that would be real fun!
23. Hi, For all those Loti "resting" over the Christmas/winter period, now could be the chance to bag a good offer. I saw this on antoher Lotus website, I have no connection with them but I thought the offer looked vcery good, if you have some wheels in need of a freshen up this could be a good deal, check out their website at: -My link £20.00 a wheel sounds like a very good price to me. kim
If the Esprit is still running then I'm surprised its not been chased by two mad men in a blue severly leaning Renault Clio....don't you fancy a go at this Kim - ah, maybe the Renault is not classic enough! Tim.
Tim I would love ago, but the Clio is too new! lol. Latest update is that they have made it to the finish and they are in John O'Groats, the question is now will they get back! The Esprit had to be taken to a garage for "specialist repairs" at one point but is now back in the running! He is obviously very determined.

Latest up date. Some cars crashed out this morning, friends still in but stuck on M8, the plan is to regroup at stirling services and wait for roads to be cleared. Not sure if they will be able to complete forecast just gets worse. Still 276 miles to go from there!
